What to expect during your first treatment

During your first appointment a full case history (including general medical questions) will be taken, and a thorough examination given, along with appropriate advice and treatment. Treatment objectives will be discussed, for example, reduction/elimination of pain, increase in mobility, or increase in ability to live independently. Osteopathy is patient centered, and a treatment plan geared to you as an individual will be developed.

During examination and treatment you will usually be asked to remove some of your outer clothing. Please wear underwear, shorts, or sports bra you feel comfortable in. You are welcome to have someone else present during your appointment, indeed, in some cases, for example if you are a carer for the patient, or, as a patient you have a carer, it may be advantageous to have the carer present.

On occasion further examinations such as MRI scans, x-rays, or blood tests, may be needed. These will be arranged in conjunction with your doctor. If you wish to to self fund rather than use the NHS, scans such as MRI, can usually be arranged within 48 hours.

During your first appointment you will also be given an estimate of how many treatments you will need. Generally the longer you have had your symptoms the more treatment will be needed. Many patients, however, require no more than 3-4 treatments.

Apart from exceptional cases, you will always receive treatment on your first appointment.

If you have any questions or concerns between your treatments, please do not hesitate to call to discuss them further.
